Smith and Hawken

By brindey

Smith and Hawken emailed catalogue readers last week about their decision to close Internet retailing and sell their upscale garden equipment in stores only. Now, news broke that they are closing their doors and the going-out-of-business sale has begun. I, of course, headed to their website to look at what they had on sale. A screen of a chalkboard posted on a garden wall thanking me for 30 years of business was all that was left.

I recognize they are going out of business and cannot sell me anything online anyway. But…I wanted to look. They aren’t looking for repeat business, good customer service, or positive reviews. Smith and Hawken has become a huge yard sale, if you will.

So, now what? I have to go in. Which means I will most likely buy something deeply discounted. Which is their end goal –to get rid of stuff.
But couldn’t they keep the pictures up?
